Yes, it's licensing is confusing, and it's website is even more so,
but Sheesh.
MySQL is a solid database, and when you use it commercially you need
to pay a single, one off server license for each installation. If you
want to use it to develop GPL software, then it's free.
Commercial option:
250 Euro if you don't use InnoDB
500 Euro if you do use InnoDB
Alternatively, you can become a partner for 2000 Euro, and distribute
as many as you want.
GPL option:
You distribute your source with the app under GPL
Note: There is nothing to stop you from selling the software, as long
as you give the source code away with it. I've done this a number of
times (although into the vertical markets).
This is a Much better deal than Openbase, 4D or Oracle licensing who
all charge by clients (5 user, 10 user, 20 user etc..), and are often
based on subscription (annual payments).
It is on par with Valentina pricing in my opinion in terms of
features per dollar.
The only better offer out there is postgreSQL, and while I agree it
is powerful and progressing very quickly, it is not a reliable enough
base for me to work from just yet.
So I choose MySQL.
