[13] Article on Fergie/Strachan
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, May 15, 2006 by ed:
 http://sport.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=719202006
http://sport.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=719202006

'ALEX Ferguson had his disapproving face on when talking about Celtic's
decision to withdraw Shaun Maloney, Stephen McManus and David Marshall from the
Kirin Cup last week so they could play in the Roy Keane and Alan Shearer's
testimonials instead. "Gordon Strachan phoned Walter Smith to say he wanted
them to play against United," said an incredulous Fergie. "I don't know what
this game is coming to."

Actually, Alex, we rather suspect you do. Strachan's decision to keep hold of
his three players might have been peculiar and worthy of criticism. It may even
have been done against the wishes of the three involved. Who knows but it's
possible, given the heart-warming destruction of the Bulgarians, that some
short-term damage has been done to the international careers of Maloney,
McManus and Marshall. If Ferguson had all that in mind when he issued his
little rebuke to Strachan then he's a changed man. He's certainly not the
Fergie of old.

If you remember, in May 1988, Ferguson withdrew Strachan - who must have been
biting his lip hard when trying not to mention it - and Brian McClair from a
Scotland friendly against Colombia, not because Manchester United had a
must-win game to play at the tail-end of the season; rather it was a nice
little earner they'd arranged with Milan that sparked the call-offs. TV
demanded that United field their strongest team in the match and with so much
cash on the table, Andy Roxburgh got a call from Old Trafford. "Sorry, Andy,
but."

Ferguson getting wistful about players not being released for international
duty is a tad humorous given the fact that driving international managers to
the point of despair has been a trait of Fergie's down the years. Neil Webb was
instructed to tell the then England manager Graham Taylor that he was unfit for
a friendly international when the truth was he was desperate to play. Webb
spilled the beans to Taylor and Ferguson never forgave him. "Webb had to be
taught a lesson to ram home how important Manchester United is to me," he said.
The player was dropped, then sold not long after.

In his book, The Boss: The Many Sides of Alex Ferguson, Michael Crick, sums up
the philosophy at United back then. "Amazingly, considering that he himself had
once been an international manager, Ferguson actually used to prepare an
advance list of the United players he wanted to claim were injured and should
therefore be withdrawn from their national squads. According to one account
Ferguson would give his 'injured' list to the club physiotherapist, Jim
McGregor, the week before international games were due to take place."

Ryan Giggs was a regular on that list. Incredibly, it wasn't until 2000, nine
years after he made his Wales debut, that Giggs first played in a friendly for
his country. "It was a foregone conclusion that Ryan wasn't going to turn up
for friendlies," said Bobby Gould, the former Welsh manager. "There was always
an injury. We always got a letter from a doctor or something from the United
physio.Ryan didn't play a friendly until Mark Hughes became Wales manager and I
find that quite poignant. Mark played for Alex at United so he obviously had a
different relationship with him than I or Terry Yorath [his predecessor] had."

For close to 20 years there's been friction between Ferguson and Strachan, or
"arguments, niggles, bits and bobs" as the Celtic manager once put it. It was
with a total absence of irony that the Manchester United manager continued the
squabble last week.'

'I should know. Once Sir Alex Ferguson falls out with someone, he's utterly
ruthless in dismissing that person from his world. But let's not be lured into
the notion that Ruud Van Nistelrooy's departure from Old Trafford was down to
recent training ground spats.

Any footballer with a brain - yes, I appreciate, some may not have one - would
tell you such incidents happen all the time.

No, the Dutchman's card was marked when he was left out of the Carling Cup
final in February. At the time, United fans derided my view that Van Nistelrooy
would be out in the summer. Well, who was right?

But is it smart getting rid of the club's most prolific scorer since Denis Law?
Sure, Ferguson was quick, too, to despatch Beckham, Stam and Keane for supposed
misdemeanours. Tell me. Did he ever adequately replace those players? It's a
huge gamble. Perhaps, Fergie's last?'

The out-of-favour Manchester United striker is included in the Dutch World Cup
squad ahead of the country’s top league scorer Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Huntelaar scored more than 50 goals this season for Ajax and previous club
Heerenveen.

Spurs midfielder Edgar Davids has been snubbed but out-of-form Barcelona star
Mark van Bommel made the squad.'

[10] Italian scandal grows
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, May 15, 2006 by ed:

'Juventus' general manager Luciano Moggi has quit the club, in light of the
recent accusations levelled at him.

Moggi is at the heart of the refereeing scandal that is enveloping Italian
football.

The whole of Juventus board resigned after allegations were made that the club
was in some way colluding with officials in the Italian Football Federation
over who would and has refereed their games.

Recordings of Moggi talking with officials over referees have already been
released after his phone was tapped, and he has now quit in order to defend
himself.

"From tomorrow [Monday], I will have resigned as general manager of Juventus,"
he said after The Old Lady retained their Serie A title with a 2-0 win over
Reggina.

"From this evening, the world of football is no longer my world.

"Now I will think only about defending myself from all the malice that been
said about me.

"I ask you for a courtesy, don't ask me any questions because I don't have the
desire or the strength. I don't have the soul for it, they have killed it."

Juventus are not the only side involved in the enquiry which has been launched
by Italian prosecutors, and has already seen over 40 people investigated.

Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio have also been named, while Italy's proposed World
Cup referee Massimo De Santis has been pulled from this summer's finals after
he also became embroiled.

Moggi is due in Rome on Monday to meet prosecutors and answer questions about
his role in the scandal, and also explain the role his son's football agency
plays within the game.

Meanwhile, Italian Referees Association (AIA) president Tullio Lanese has
announced that he has suspended himself.'

[9] Chelsea bag Ballack... Shevchenko next?
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, May 15, 2006 by ed:
Mourinho

"I am happy with the conversations I had with him and the reasons why he
decided to come here. He believes in us, he believes he can have success, he
believes in the UEFA Champions League and believes he can have three or four
years of success in a crucial part of his career. He chose Chelsea, we are
happy and I think everybody should be happy to have such a player in The
Premiership."

Kenyon

"If you look, he is at the top of his game in Germany, he is going to the World
Cup as Germany's captain and is a big player. This tells you how far Chelsea
have come that we can attract a player like that. It is a big step for the
Premier League and for Chelsea. He had a genuine desire to come for the right
reasons. He wants to further his career and is a big professional. As such, you
are up against the major clubs in Europe. But we sold him on our sporting
ambitions over the next three years"

(and the massive wages had nothing to do with it of course...)

Mourinho on Shevchenko

"The natural thing is we have a big striker coming to join us. I can't say if
it is Shevchenko or not. Shevchenko is a player who belongs to Milan and Milan
have him on a long contract and can say the same thing as we in relation to
(William) Gallas which is no offers are wanted. It is the power the clubs have
when they have contracts with the player. Shevchenko, I cannot say I am
confident because Milan have the power."

Kenyon

"Shevchenko is a type of player we would like. We have shown our interest in
him for the last two seasons and have had dialogue with Milan/ But Milan, like
Chelsea, don't lose players they don't want to, but to improve what we have got
it would have to be a big player. Shevchenko is of that class. It has got to be
50-50, but I wouldn't put it at any more than that."

"We want a good start in the Premiership next season, without any complications
with the injury to Wayne Rooney as the bandwagon gathers pace to get him to the
World Cup come hell or high water. For the sake of the boy himself and the rest
of the England team we will do everything possible to get him fit in time but I
am not going along with this half-baked idea of him going to Germany 80 per
cent fit and then find him being pressured into playing before he is ready.
That was the experience of David Beckham in the last World Cup and it was a
disaster because he wasn't right. I know Wayne is a special player but he would
be up against highly honed opponents and in those circumstances you need to be
not only physically fit but match fit. Wayne is young and what is needed here
is a mature decision, which is what he will get from Manchester United when the
time comes to assess his readiness for an elite competition involving the best
players in the world. Expectation surrounds exceptional players like Wayne
Rooney. It was there even before his injury with the media saying he can win
the World Cup for England. That was just as ridiculous, pinning so much
pressure on such a young player."

[5] David Meek, close friend of Fergie, writing in the Belfast Telegraph -
'Ruud has played his last game for United'
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, May 14, 2006 by ed:
david meek

'IT'S happening again, and like every other time, there will be no way back.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy has played his last game for Manchester United, and for
good or ill, there will be no change of mind, no forgiveness.

Once Sir Alex has made up his mind, he doesn't change it, and so you can take
it that the Dutchman sooner or later will be on his way.

It might not be for a while because Nistelrooy is worth around £10 million in
the transfer market and Ferguson is not a fool - he won't be prepared to accept
peanuts just to get the player out of his hair.

Sorting out the player's future may well have to wait until Van Nistelrooy has
completed his duties with the Holland team at the World Cup.

The Dutch striker left Manchester to join up with his Dutch international
team-mates at a pre-World Cup training camp within hours of the bust-up that
saw him quit Old Trafford before the kick-off against Charlton last Sunday.

Now whether you describe his departure as a walk-out, or prefer the agent's
suggestion that his player was sent home, is a mute point. Personally I would
say it was a bit of both..

And we have seen that happen once or twice over the years, most recently with
the row between Fergie and Roy Keane that led the captain to join Celtic.

And this happened to a player Ferguson loved like a son and who he described
this week at the Keane testimonial match as the best player he had managed in
his 20 seasons in charge.

He was similarly ruthless with David Beckham when he felt his commitment to
Manchester United was weakening. There were no second thoughts with players
like Jaap Stam and Paul Ince either.

It's a hard-line impatient attitude that contrasts strangely with the patience
he is capable of showing, as indeed he did with Van Nistelrooy when he waited a
year for the player to recover from serious knee surgery and was loyal to the
extreme.

It's sad that the Van Nistelrooy experience should come to such a fraught end
because he has been an outstanding player for Manchester United in his time at
Old Trafford.

This season he is again the team's top scorer with 21 goals in the Premiership
and you don't lightly cast aside that degree of scoring excellence. Indeed,
there are those who feel Fergie is taking leave of his senses.

As Oliver Holt wrote the other day in the Daily Mirror under a headline
"Fergie's losing the plot if Van man drives off" ?"Selling him would be a huge
step backwards and a massive blow to the club."

There will be some who agree, but not Sir Alex Ferguson who believes the player
had become a disruptive force in the dressing room...

So once more the manager sticks his neck out with a brave or reckless decision,
depending on how you see it.

But if you are going to be critical just remember that Sir Alex Ferguson has
been down this road before - and he is usually right!'

[3] Fergie at John Lyall's funeral service

Posted Sunday, May 14, 2006 by ed:
“John was a man full of great honesty and integrity and strength which, in the
occupation he went into was very much needed. He was straight forward and down
to earth and had humility in bounds. He was a great football man and a great
person. Football managing is about strength and John epitomised that very
clearly. He was straightforward and very down to earth. They are great
qualities. I first met John on holiday in 1982 when the World Cup was on. Did
we talk about the holiday? No, we talked about football and tactics and the
wives listened to us. As time went on, we still kept in touch while I was
manager at Aberdeen and John at West Ham. When I took the job at Manchester
United, I didn't have a great insight into the tactics of teams in England. I
relied on John and he was fantastic. Really, that help was essential to my
start at Manchester United. We lost some games but that was John's fault!! It's
a privilege” to speak at the service. It was one of the great relationships I
had with a manager. Even when he finished the game, he always paid attention
to how we were playing.”

[1] More on that Martin Edwards case
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, May 14, 2006 by ed:
from http://news.independent.co.uk/business/news/article422942.ece
http://news.independent.co.uk/business/news/article422942.ece wrote:

'Martin Edwards, the former Manchester United chairman arrested as part of a
money-laundering probe, wrote late last year in support of disgraced financier
Michael Brown to the banking giant investigating him.

Mr Edwards was arrested earlier this year and released on police bail. He was
subsequently released from bail, however, after the City of London police - who
are leading the money-laundering investigation - informed him that they now
believed him to be a victim of fraud, rather than a perpetrator. At the time,
he told The Independent on Sunday he had been through "a pretty awful time".

Mr Edwards became embroiled in the probe through his involvement with Mr Brown,
the former Liberal Democrat donor awaiting trial in Wormwood Scrubs.

HSBC started civil proceedings against Mr Brown and his company, 5th Avenue
Partners, last autumn and the bank had his assets frozen. The case is
understood to revolve around $45m (£25m) invested in Mr Brown's companies by
Kevin So, Yan Lucy Lu - both believed to be based in China - a retired American
lawyer, Robert William Mann, and Mr Edwards.

Court documents seen by The Independent on Sunday include a letter from Mr
Edwards written in October and witnessed by his then solicitors Peters &
Peters. It was sent in reply to an earlier letter from HSBC. The bank was
concerned over whether Mr Brown was using the investors' money as specified.

Mr Edwards' response stated that he had known Mr Brown "for some considerable
time" and that he was "content" the money had been used "in Mr Brown's
discretion".

Mr Edwards, who appointed Sir Alex Ferguson and left the club in 2000, was
unavailable for comment.

Mr Brown, who is Scottish but lives in Spain, left London before Christmas for
his home in Majorca. HSBC, meanwhile, approached the Crown Prosecution Service
last month to obtain a warrant for his arrest. Charges against Mr Brown include
perverting the course of justice and forgery.

While the CPS assessed the application, two other alleged offences came to
light: obtaining a passport by deception and making a false declaration to
obtain a passport.

Mr Brown, 40, was extradited from Majorca last week and is scheduled to stand
trial in October over the criminal charges.

The civil case will resume then as well.

Mr Brown's offices and home in Majorca were raided last week and a number of
items were seized, including a Porsche Cayenne, a Bentley, a yacht, paintings
and documents. '

[13] From todays Sunday Mirror

'Ruud van Nistelrooy believes he has been "betrayed"by Sir Alex Ferguson.

And the Dutch star's closest football ally has, revealed the moment when Van
Nistelrooy's Manchester United career effectively ended.

Wim van Hanegem, the former Dutch World Cup hero and Van Nistelrooy's close
friend, said: "The departure of Roy Keane had a massive impact on Ruud.

"In the dressing-room Ruud openly sided with Keane when Ferguson de, cided to
separate the player from the club. Because of Ruud's passion and determination
he would not keep his mouth shut.

"Ruud can go far, - sometimes too far. And that has worked " against him at
United."

But Van Hanegem also believes his friend made a basic error in his judgment of
the United boss.

"Ruud was completely overwhelmed by Sir Alex when he first got to know him.
When Ruud got injured the first time he was going to move from PSV Eindhoven to
United, Ferguson kept in touch with him all the time.

"Ruud really appreciated that. He found it amazing that the biggest man at the
world's biggest football club showed such a nice side. But now Ruud has come to
ealise, I hope, that Ferguon's caring had nothing to do with a human touch. It
as only because Ruud was a world-class striker and Ferguson was desperate to
get him.

"Now Ruud has found out the hard way. He, has also realised that Ferguson has a
funny way of ditching his biggest stars. Ruud has seen what happened to David
Beckham, Jaap Stam and Roy Keane."

Another of Van Nistelrooy's closest I friends added: "Last summer, Ruud was
worried that the United team was not strong enough to ' challenge for the top
trophies and he had opportunities to move to a club that would help him achieve
his dream of playing at the highest level in Europe. "He went to speak to the
manager about this. Sir Alex begged him not to leave and told him he'd build '
a great team around Ruud.

"Now, less than a year later, Ferguson has come out with the most outrageous
excuses to remove Ruud from the club. Ruud feels betrayed."
