Well, without question, I recommend the Buslogic 948/958 controllers.  
They are bullet proof and work flawlessly with with Linux kernel.  We 
use them almost exclusively on all of our server machines in house.
Avoid Adaptec controllers at all costs, they simply do not work well 
with Linux.
