I disagree with 'accomplish the same thing'. SO not true in this case. For starters, I run a small computer retail business. All our outgoing PCs have a network card. They are pre-loaded with XP. The pre-loading requires network connection (well, not 'requires' but to set it up without one is a nightmare). They prefer to use DHCP. Besides, with the amount of machines coming and going in this case STATIC IPs would be a nighmare in my case. When they come in for repair etc, we use the same connection to load drivers/apps etc. Trust me, copying hosts files and setting the IP every time on the client machine and name to match the host files is a crappy option. Please be careful what you write - not everybody is in a blissful situation like you. The incoming or outgoing PCs here grab an IP address, automatically set their internet gateway (we activate the PCs before going out), and patched via update before they go out. All simple, easy and automatic. > If you often get visiting UNIX/Linux machines, you may need an internal > DNS. If the visiting machines are Windows, just enable WINS on a Samba > server and recent versions of Windows will use WINS to resolve DNS queries. Keyword 'recent'. All client PCs we get in here can use DHCP. Not all will automatically resolve WINS. We get all sorts here. Not a good situation. Again, DHCP is the only option for us. > For small networks, DNS and DHCP are often more trouble than they're worth. After trying to get this to work, I guess you're right on that one though! lol Just re-reading this I realise it sounds a bit harsh, and that is not my intention. My apologies for that, but please keep an open mind as to the multitude of configurations we have here on this list and why we use them as opposed to some other options. I get a bit upset when I try something new like dynamic IP/name updating which would come in handy for me, and someone comes back with 'use static addresses'. Thanks anyway and I apologise again for sounding a bit rude.
