Broadcast. Each box broadcasts on the subnet broadcast address and one of the boxes is elected to become the master browser. The master browser keeps track of all the available resources on the network and responds to WINS name resolution requests. The master browser and WINS server are actually a little different, but both operate using SMB protocols. If I reacall correctly, a master browser uses broadcast, but a WINS server can be on a different subnet and use NETBIOS over a routable protocol like TCP/IP. the master browser can be any Winbox on the subnet. It is selected using an election process among the machines on the subnet. A WINS server has to be designated and configured because it needs to be prepared to respond to updates and resolution requests from other subnets. Still, both master browser and WINS server capabilites are one-liners in smb.conf. If you only have one subnet, then tell your Samba box to be a master browser and your Winboxes will be all set.
