Well I FEEL that they were 3000 miles away, tense in the play-offs, and
playing until their body clock of 1AM, starting at a time when they
would normally wind down at home on the couch. It matters. But they'll
be back today. Just wait and see.

The numbers actually support your hyphothesis.

I was listening to Felger and Mazz on the Sports Hub yesterday. (As an
aside, a vast improvement over the Big Show. I highly recommend setting
your dial to 98.5 rather than 850. Or, visit, 985thesportshub.com and
listen online.)

Anyway, some Globe or Boston.com reporter ran the numbers. The Sox are
hitting something like .217 against the best pitchers in the league (not
sure of the number or how they're defined, but I'll trust the reporter.)
League average against those same pitchers is .240.

The Angels hit .270 against those same pitchers.

Seriously though, what I said was that the team is not hitting. Call it
"flat", call it "lack of momentum", call it a random period of bad luck,
whatever, hitting has been a problem against good teams lately (ie. the
Yankees in September). Ray asked "why is it bad hitting and not good
pitching?" and I used Lackey's stats to illustrate my point that while
Lackey (and Darren Oliver) are good pitchers, we are making any decent
pitcher look like a Cy Young candidate right now.

Maybe that will change tonight. I certainly hope so.

Seriously, you guys watched this televison right? What
kind of feeling would you get from 3000 miles away.

I find he responds best to numbers.

We were flat. You know I'm not a numbers guy,
but rather a feeling guy. I felt they were flat.

Yeah, you're right, I don't mean to take
anything away from Lackey. He was good. I just think we made him look
better than he really is last night. On the season the guy has a 1.27
WHIP, 3.83 ERA and a .263 BAA. Good numbers, but remember that he's
pitching a lot of those games against the depths of the AL West. For
the game last night he was 0.67 WHIP, 0.0 ERA and .153 BAA. You would
think an offense like ours should be able to produce at least average
numbers against him.

In general I just feel like our bats are not
producing. Plus I knew I would get a rise out of you if I mentioned
anything about momentum, streaks or trends.

Big game tonight - I'm glad to know Beckett is
taking the ball.

Why is it that when the other team gets no runs
its due to our great pitching, but when we get no runs its due to our
lousy hitting.

Are we the only team with great pitching?
