I'm all for drinking the cool aid, but I'm going to refrain a bit here. It seems like every off season the Sox or their media feed us a theme that we're supposed to get excited about. Last year was the youth, a few years before that it was value (See Coco). I'm sure there were others I can't recall. Now we're supposed to be jazzed by defense.
I'm okay with the team as constituted. I think our offense--which was among the best in the league last year--will be the same, maybe a bit better. Our pitching will be much better with the Lackey signing (and I like Boof, there I said it.) Please recall that Paul Byrd started six or seven games for the Sox at the tail end of last year. Our rotation had some question marks. But I'm not going to lean too heavily on the defense argument. It just strikes me more as a justification for deals that have happened than an explanation of why the Sox made the deals in the first place.
