If dealing those two gets a power-hitting first baseman just coming into his prime, I can live with it. Ellsbury's OBP is in the lower third of major-league leadoff hitters and he doesn't provide a ton of power. I like the kid and I like what he brings, but I think the upgrade to Gonzalez is worth it, especially given that Mike Cameron can play center field.
Any chance they make the deal for Gonzalez, who's on a very club-friendly deal at the moment, and still sign Bay to play left? That team would stack up very favorably against the Yankees. It's also feasible payroll-wise because a lot of money is coming off the books the next two years. -- Matt ________________________________ From: Steve Gendron <[email protected]> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Thu, December 17, 2009 11:03:54 AM Subject: Dealing Ellsbury? Talk is that the Red Sox would have to deal both Clay Bucholz AND Jacoby Ellsbury to land Adrian Gonzalez. Ellsbury's speed makes him so valuable, I'm not sure I like where a trade like that would leave the team. --You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Red Sox Citizens" group.
