Interesting point of view, Ray. The Macy's NYC fireworks last night had a military aspect, playing several branches of the military's anthems - but also had some strange selections that I can't recall - non-military. But I guess having won our independence via force of arms 234 years ago, there has always been a military aspect to the celebration. It's just more so now that are actively involved in conflicts and everyone supports the troops (if not the wars).
I wonder if the celebrations had the same feelings during the Vietnam War. I am guessing not. Oh, and if the Sox make Tynan a regular visitor/singer, like he was for the Yankees, then I will be glad not to be able tro see most Sox games on TV. The guy is a blowhard and self-centered jerk. He used to take a 2 1/2 minute song and turn it into a 'look at me' 5 minute rendition at Yankee Stadium. From the veterans to the jet plane flyover to the martial music from previous wars, I was struck by how much the 4th was now associated with war. One of the the things I love about baseball is the way that it reflects the community. For example we have the Brockton Rox and Irish American day and we have the Worcester Tornadoes and Cub Scout. We also have the PMC tribute at Fenway (which always makes me tear up). Our baseball games reflect what is important to our community.
