Your viewpoint is also interesting, Dan. I guess I never second-guessed the
military theme of the Fourth of July before. It was always my holiday as I was
born the day before it. The whole bombs bursting in air with fireworks and
such. I don't suppose they lit those bombs for a display of fun in 1812 or
before.

I can't imagine a Fourth of July celebration without a military theme. The guys
didn't just decide over some beers that we were going to split off from England
and then just ignore the British till they went away. Many good men took up
arms to take freedom. They laid down their lives to rip freedom from our
oppressors and make the most free country on the planet. A country spawning
centuries of innovation giving us technology and medicine that are incredulous
to think about. Not to mention that most of it came from military research
funding. Yes, all this technology that saves lives came from funding of
weapons. And the Fourth of July is and always has been, in my opinion, about
our military might that created our great nation AND has saved many countries
and peoples from genocide, oppression, persecution, and annihilation.

And I'm not even that patriotic any more.

John

Interesting point of view, Ray. The Macy's NYC fireworks last night had a
military aspect, playing several branches of
the military's anthems - but also had some strange selections that I can't
recall - non-military. But I guess having won
our independence via force of arms 234 years ago, there has always been a
military aspect to the celebration. It's just
more so now that are actively involved in conflicts and everyone supports the
troops (if not the wars).

I wonder if the celebrations had the same feelings during the Vietnam War. I am
guessing not.

Oh, and if the Sox make Tynan a regular visitor/singer, like he was for the
Yankees, then I will be glad not to be able tro
see most Sox games on TV. The guy is a blowhard and self-centered jerk. He used
to take a 2 1/2 minute song and turn
it into a 'look at me' 5 minute rendition at Yankee Stadium.

I will say this. Ronan Tynan was the only aspect of the Fourth of
July festivities that didn't show off America's military power. From
the veterans to the jet plane flyover to the martial music from
previous wars, I was struck by how much the 4th was now associated
with war.

One of the the things I love about baseball is the way that it
reflects the community. For example we have the Brockton Rox and
Irish American day and we have the Worcester Tornadoes and Cub Scout.
We also have the PMC tribute at Fenway (which always makes me tear
up).

Our baseball games reflect what is important to our community. And I
was really struck by how much we've allowed war and military power
define America.
