But the thing is, as a DH or 1B (where his defense is terrible), he's
nothing special as a hitter. His value is in being a better hitter than most
catchers. A career .838 OPS (.844 last year). That's, I don't know, Adam
LaRoche? The Sox can likely do better than that -- will likely have to do
better. Youkilis, hopefully, will stay be taking one of those spots, so
holding one warm would preclude getting an Adrian Gonzalez or Prince
Fielder, etc.

Yes, I know Youk can play third, and I'm comfortable with him there for a
year or two, but I don't think he's playing there in four years.
