I suspect he had some elbow injury all along, but not one severe enough to
warrant a DL stint or TJ surgery. I suspect that
this might be a case where the doctor may have said (perhaps with some prodding
from the Sox), 'Look, big guy, your elbow
isn't shot, but at some point in the next year or two, it could go.'. So I am
wondering if this is somewhat preventative TJ surgery.
I mean, if he had REALLY needed it, he wouldn't have been pitching, period.
Wouldn't have been able to. So, this gives the Sox
and him an out for 2012, and allows him to demonstrate his commitment to the
team, blah blah blah, by really working hard at rehab.

I think many guys actually come back with stronger elbows after this surgery.
But I don't know what it does for personality.

So I may get crushed here for defending
the guy, but isn’t it likely that he’s had this injury all year and
tried to pitch through it?  Don’t get me wrong—they guy is
still a massive jerk—but maybe he should get a little credit.  Also,
according to Wikipedia, there is a 85-92% chance of a full recovery.  Maybe
the way to handle him is surgery/rehab and see what he can do.  It takes
about a year to fully recover.  Might not be the most prudent thing to do
to trade him, most likely eat a big portion of his salary (and get nothing in
return), then watch him revert back to his pre-injured form.

I hope so because that helps with his value to the Sox to trade him for
2013&2014.  This guy just keeps getting worse even not pitching...

Wow! That's quite a
contract clause. I guess they were concerned enough about his shoulder. I
wonder if that's tradeable. I assume it would be.
