sorry guys, i didn't read all the posts before replying previously.
steve, this is not a flame. it's something i know alot about (i am an
engineer, i know the building code, i've done the calcs for my own tank, and
sadly we have two waterbeds --anyone want to buy one??) anyway forget
waterbeds.
i can tell you that if you consider the weight of a 180g tank (i think they
are about 300 lbs), the stand, hood, sump, all the equipment, water and
rock, you will likely exceed the capacity of standard floor joists. this
means that you could see effects ranging from nothing at all to differential
settlement to structural failure of the floor joist. depends on a whole
bunch of things.
the floor joist do NOT hold up a house. the load bearing walls do, and
those walls (or beams) which are founded on concrete footings support the
floor joist. the floor joist often support interior walls, but that worsens
the case if you are looking to place your tank beside a non-load bearing
interior wall because you alreading have a load on the joist from that wall.
i wanted a 180g and went with a 135g because my house (with full dimension
fir 2"x12" 16"c floor joist) couldn't support a 180 with stand sump etc. i
also know that most houses are not built with full dimension lumber which
means that they are capable of supporting LESS weight than what my floor
can.
