Hi Shane,
I live in a building, plz dont ask me about joist and that :) I really dont
know.. :(
My building is around 50 years old ( I live in europe you know.. ) And I
have there a 75g tank... With around 110lbs of live rock on it and 25 lbs of
sand..
Unfortaly , I have some nasty neighbours, that were always complaining about
the noise of the pumps etc etc.. So I moved the sump outside the living room
( the balcony actually, its inside a garden box, isolated and fitted with 3
x 300 w heaters to make temperature diferential minimal :) )...
The aquarium is a AGA with 2 holes in the back ( not the bottom ) , meaning
that the PVC pipes goes from the back to 10inches down, then cross the wall
and goes into sump. this also means that my aquarium is not that close to
the wall, its like 10" away from it.
The setup is there for around 2 years, no problems ( you are now figuring
"what the hell he wants me for ? " :) )
Well, I ordered a 170g tankand stand. The holes are drilled into the bottom,
that means the aquarium will be only 4" away from the wall ( instead of the
original 10 to 12" ). I ordered a 55lbs of live rock and 20lbs of sand...
( remeber that the sump is outside, not beneath the tank )... Do you think
I'm going to have problems with the floor ? Before I buyed the tank, I made
some calculations, they were :
75g tank filled with water --- 600lbs
110lbs of rock ( duh ) ------- 110lbs
25lbs sand ------------------- 25lbs
misc ------------------------- 50lbs
Grand total -------------------785lbs
Foot print of the tank : 49.2" x 20
Area of foot print : 984
Pressure ( total weight / area ) : 0,80
NEW TANK :
170g tank filled with -------- 1400 lbs
160lbs of live rock ---------- 160lbs
50 lbs of sand --------------- 50 lbs
misc -------------------------- 70 lbs
Grand Total ------------------ 1680lbs
Foot print of the tank 68" x 22
Area : 1496
Pressure ( total weight / area ) : 1,22
As I said, I'm an european... you might looking to these values and think "
what the hell's is talking about ? " , well.. here we work with cm's, m's
and lt's.... too complicated to make the calculations in sq, inchs, and lbs
:) Alas, I'm in law, not in engeneering, so maths to me its an obscure
science :)
The question is : should I concern ? I talked to a couple of friends and
they said that I wont have problems, the weight is more but the area is more
also... But after the readings of these posts I'm getting worried.. so I
would like your opinion.. Before my neighbour below wokes up with a 170g in
the face :) ( I dont worry much about her, she's a b***, I care about my
zanthurum, porites, etcetc ) lol *sigh* :)
Thanks,
Goncalo Proenca
ps : sorry for my lausy english.

sorry guys, i didn't read all the posts before replying previously.
steve, this is not a flame. it's something i know alot about (i am an
engineer, i know the building code, i've done the calcs for my own tank, and
sadly we have two waterbeds --anyone want to buy one??) anyway forget
waterbeds.
i can tell you that if you consider the weight of a 180g tank (i think they
are about 300 lbs), the stand, hood, sump, all the equipment, water and
rock, you will likely exceed the capacity of standard floor joists. this
means that you could see effects ranging from nothing at all to differential
settlement to structural failure of the floor joist. depends on a whole
bunch of things.
the floor joist do NOT hold up a house. the load bearing walls do, and
those walls (or beams) which are founded on concrete footings support the
floor joist. the floor joist often support interior walls, but that worsens
the case if you are looking to place your tank beside a non-load bearing
interior wall because you alreading have a load on the joist from that wall.
i wanted a 180g and went with a 135g because my house (with full dimension
fir 2"x12" 16"c floor joist) couldn't support a 180 with stand sump etc. i
also know that most houses are not built with full dimension lumber which
means that they are capable of supporting LESS weight than what my floor
can.
hopes this helps clear things up for a few people. i can provide add'l info
if anybody wants it. hello? hello?? oh damn, did i put you all to
sleep?
