Man, you guys are crazy.... Or maybe I am the crazy one!! I have my 70
glass tank, a 25 gallon sump with 15 gallons of water, and a 15 gallon
refugium set up in my apartment, on the second floor. About 15 feet away (on
another wall) I have a 55 fo tank. I have had it there for a year with out a
problem (okay, so I do carry renters insurance, because you never know, but
so far, no problems). I have had at least a 55 in every apartment I have
ever lived in, 90% of them being on the second floor. Also, I lived in a
mobile home when I was younger and had the walls lined with tanks in one
room. A 70, a 55, 2-29s, a 35 and about 5 10 gallon tanks (I was a little
out of control, breeding freshwater fish and such). The only problems I
ever had was that the humidity in my room was about a billion percent and
the windows grew mildew like nobodies business. Now, if was moving into a
home and setting up a 225 gallon tank, or Ron gave me his 715, then I would
really want to have it checked out.
As far as quakes go, I knew a guy who lived in cali a while ago when they
had a good quake, and although the tank itself survived it, he lost about 15
gallons of water on the floor, reef rocks crumbled and crushed corals and
fish. It was a mess. I really don't think there is much you can do if you
get a serious quake other than pray.... We had a tremor when I was in
Seattle, and even that caused some water to slosh out of my tank....

hey tim. i was at a seminar a couple nights ago about a research
project
where the University of British Columbia built a standard new
construction
home on a shaker table. then they induced a M7.2 quake and video'd
the
results. pretty scary.
the floor bouncing up and down isn't a big advantage. during a
quake there
will be a vertical and horizontal component and generally it is the
horizontal acceleration that does most damage. i would look at
reinforcing
the floor and providing some restraint system such that in a quake
the tank
doesn't rock back and forth until it topples. that's exactly what
bookshelves do. a simple bracket and a few screws fixes that
problem.
i'm afraid i can't help much more about your situation. if i lived
in
california i would do everything i could to earthquake proof my
home. or i
wouldn't live in california (haha, joke. we are in line for a big
shaker up
here too).
if my car or my oven or some other aspect of my life that i rely on
isn't
working, i phone someone to tell me what's wrong and see if we can
fix it.
its funny because people don't call engineers to ask about things
i've
recently seen on the list. if someone called me about these things
it would
take me a couple hours to go look at the site and then verbally
advise what
the homeowner could do. then you would know. pretty cheap
insurance
really.
have you been in this house during a smaller tremor?
