I would say the same as Shane, use the salt water imediately after you mix
it for about 20 mins.
And talking about activated carbon, Ive used it on my tanks at all times,
there was always a bag with carbon, but some one told me to take it out
because it did more damage than good. Now my tanks has been with no carbon
for about 3 weeks and everything is ok.
My question is this: Are you in pro of carbon or you dont like to use
it??? Any reason??
Marco

Ken,

Did the temperature in your tank go up? I am wondering if the heater stuck
on and overheated the water before it broke, or if it just shattered. Please
dont blame yourself, you had a faulty piece of equipment. We cant blame
ourselves for things that are out of our control.

Now, for the immediate need. Good idea on the poly filters and carbon. I
would continue to run those. You can use your salt mix as soon as it mixes,
but I would give it 15 - 20 minutes of solid heavy mixing. If you can throw
extra powerheads in their to really mix it, do so.

I am hesitant to say it was chemicals in the heater that caused your fishes
to die, but it is possible. Check your temp, please.

I know this sucks, I have had similar situations. Just do what you can to
fix it, and move on.

Let us know temp and progress.

Shane C.
