EBO is not the answer, I had one stick on and cook my reef while I was
backpacking in the Sierra's. I lost it all, clams, corals, the works-except
a Maroon strip clown and a tiger cowrie, can't explain why they lived. I
have resorted to changing my heaters every year, cheap insurance. I write
the install date with a permanent marker on the cord.
I also use a digital controller with the heater which has a separate temp
probe which I put in a different part of the tank.

Had the EXACT same thing happen to me - get rid of that brand of heater!
Ebo is the type to get (also get ground probe in there if you don't already
have one...)
Also make sure that the heater is secure - if it's bouncing around n the
sump you're asking for trouble.
(sorry to hear about your loss - nice fish!)

When I left this morning for work I have a habit of checking the temp and
the sump water level every morning. The water level was exaxtly were I have
it set for my top-off system and the temp was 79 degrees and the heater was
on.I went to work at 6 a.m. My wife called me at 9 a.m. at work and sayed
something was wrong with the tank it smelled and still smells like
electrical burning. You should see the heater both ends were blown out .The
top of the heater were the control knob is was burned to a crisp. The metal
wrapping under the glass were you read the temp was burned and charred like
a metal can in a burn barrel.I think that is what what poisoned the
tank, lots of metal deposits from the burnt coils and metal covering????I
wish I had enough saltwater mixed up to do the whole tank. The goby just
died.Thats all my fish gone because of a faulty heater.I will post the brand
name later.I lost a beautiful sailfin Tang,watchman goby.diamondback sleeper
gobie,cleaner wrasse,flame hawkfish,purple bicolor blennie,green spotted
mandarin and cleaner shrimp. The only upbeat note is that my corals about 15
of them are showing signs of opening a little.I have done a 10 gallon water
change and I am waiting for 5 more gallons of ro/di water to get
done.Depressing.I just got done hardplumbing my tank with an iwaki 40 rlxt
and I was going to get my refugium going this weekend and now this.I just
can't explain how bad my tank water smells now like electrical burn. The
heater itself smelled so bad I had to put it in a ziplock bag.I thought
Visa-therm was a good quality heater?Does anyone suggest a good fully
submersible heater? Thanks for the info and I'll keep ya informed on my
progress.Ken.----- Original Message -----
