I had the same thing happen with a Rio, I hate them.
It took out my Tsunami Wavemaker when it smoked...

I'm so sorry to hear about your bad luck. I had the same thing happen with a
Rio powerhead a couple years ago, it exploded in my sump. My whole tank
smelled like an electrical fire for over a week, even with massive water
changes... Lost some animals, but many of the corals I thought were goners
eventually did recover.
Visi-therms are good heaters - very accurate - but also very fragile. Either
it was defective or something bumped it. In additon to the polyfilters, you
might also want to add a bag of CupriSorb for a while, for extra help in
case of copper contamination.
I keep an extra 40 gal reservoir of RO/DI water that you're welcome to if
you're in/near NJ. I could throw in some salt and mix it up for you, if you
can use it.
