That is true. Another option is to place the skeleton of the coral in a
short piece of PVC and then place that on the substrate. the coral will be
comfortable with that set up, and you can then move it if neccesary, and it
will allow the coral to be a bit above the substrate which will allow it to
open nicely, and will make it harder for your fish to annoy it. Just make
sure the PVC is large enough in diameter that the coral fits nicely into it,
but that the PVC does not rest on the flesh of the coral.
I actually put my open brain in a piece of rock (it had a nice hole in it)
and the coral has since attached itself into this rock. I can now move the
rock along with the coral if neccesary. He opens up and drapes down over the
rock and it looks very nice.
Agreed though, the bottom of the tank is the best way to go.
