be VERY carefull when buying a hammer!!!
they arent as bulletproof as you think.
do not let the lfs guy or yourself expose it to air
do not touch its flesh anywhere near the skeleton
and keep it low in the tank during lighting acclimation.
and also feed it the day after you get it! I cant stress how important that step is.
feed it meaty type foods. do this everyother day for a couple weeks then you can cut back to once a week. I have done this for all my new lps corals and they are much easier to acclimate and keep.
lps do need meaty feedings at least once a week. remember that, if you do nothing else feed them and you will be succesfull with them. also look at the specimn b4 you buy it
go in, in the morning b4 the coral opens up and look at the skeleton, if there isnt a light brown or pink "skin" all the way around DONT buy it. if that chackes ok then go back later in the day and see how it opens. it should fully expand to at least 2 times the skeleton size.
I say all this due to the fact that I have alot of experience keeping and loosing these corals.

man, Im gonna buy a hammer today, but i assume they need at least VHO. or MH
but thats good to know that from people who really knows about this stuff not lfs salesmen who only wants to sell and have no idea of what theyre talking about.
thanks guys.

That's a good generic description that will cover most, but some specimens don't seem to fit their class. Like the fire coral, that looks like a SPS but is actually a LPS. For this reason the reference books are very helpful.

LPS: Frogspawn/Hammer/Torch/Open Brain
SPS: Acropora/Pocillapora/Tubinaria/Closed Brain

The difference is that the SPS are rigid corals that do not move in the
current. LPS are large polyped, jelly like corals that move a lot when
current is blown on them. LPS take large prey items, SPS take tiny prey
items. If you can see the mouth on the coral plainly, then chances are you
are looking at an LPS.
