This is what I mean when I say proper historical context is needed in order
to properly interpret or evaluate.

This doesn't excuse anything, it's just an observation that I believe is
valid.

Times, standards, attitudes, etc. change.  As a result, people update
themselves, and change.  Many of these changes in our society, for the
better, came about years after Howard was gone.
