How about using a receiver programmed for the same frequency and tone that the user regularly uses. Let the tone decoder activate the gate but RF shield the receiver so the range is limited such that the operator has to be in site of the gate. No additional unit programming or touch tone encoder would be required. Also the safety issue of controlling a gate that can't be seen is eliminated.
