Turn only your transmitter off when it starts and listen to the  
receiver.  If it goes away, your own transmitter is part of the mix  
that your receiver is hearing...

Also "GMRS Repeater" doesn't tell us much about the quality of your  
receiver or its front-end.  What kind of repeater is it?
