I didn't intend to start the debate about package bloat again.

Here's how you can see how the dependency comes with cups:

# rpm -q --provides avahi-compat-libdns_sd
libdns_sd.so.1()(64bit)
avahi-compat-libdns_sd = 0.6.16-1.el5_2.1

# rpm -q --whatrequires "libdns_sd.so.1()(64bit)"
avahi-compat-libdns_sd-0.6.16-1.el5_2.1
cups-1.3.7-8.el5
