I agree with Scott that the occupation in Israel cannot continue.
We are seeing the results of occupation in Iraq.
We occupied the Philippines and Guam and Wake Islands. We occupied Cuba.
We occupied a big piece of Mexico and annexed it into the United States.
That works because they (Mexicans) became Americans even though prejudice
survived but over time that has changed and there are Mexican-Americans
participating in the democratic process. It worked in Hawaii. It doesn't
work in Puerto Rico as well because PR is only partially included but if
it was annexed as a state I believe the independence movement would be
extinguished. Anywhere occupation has continued as an occupation there
have been insurgencies and discontent and inequities.
As to the affects of political (as well as economic alienation)
alienation, in Washington, D.C., there have been in the past discontent
and rioting and the people feel cut off from the process of
self-determination. The poor in South Central LA were cut off from the
process. They were the poor on the fringe of society. With the growing gap
between rich and poor and we going back to those conditions. The cops are
becoming uncomfortable again also and this could lead to an another social
explosion.
But anywhere there has been annexation and inclusion -- not the kind of
Jewish exclusion which the right want wants in Israel, there has
eventually been a amalgamation into the melting pot. The only other
solution is the one which existed in Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, Iraq
and anywhere else that strong central government headed by dictatorships,
i.e. Tito, Saddam Hussein, Stalin, etc -- to hold them together until the
dictatorship ends. Democracy does work but democracy requires inclusion,
not exclusion.
Even where we had occupation in those countries taken in wars to fulfill
our _destiny_, which presidents like Teddy Roosevelt, McKinley and others
saw also as god's will and the U.S. make them safe for profiteering and
set up protectorates but didn't make them part of the union, we ultimately
turned control over to them except we still have our military bases, our
symbols of occupation, in all of them and strong anti-Americanism festers.
Anti-Israelism is festering among Arabs in the territories, in Israel, in
all Arab countries because Israel is seen as a _foreign_ occupation, like
Americans are in Iraq. Antisemitism is a symptom of exclusion and foreign
occupation. It is demonetization, which is the methodology for intense
hatred. IT IS A FORM OF PROPAGANDA.
The Church fathers and the various popes and Christian clerics used the
propaganda of hate to cause antisemitism to fester. The libel was that the
Jews killed Christ. That hatred is being fanned once again, especially by
plays and movies, like Mel Gibson's Passion. Of course it isn't Mel
Gibson's story, it is the centuries old story of the Christian Church, of
Paul and John. It is an old tool. It works. It led to pogroms and
expulsions.
The U.S. military calls those resisting occupation in Iraq "anti-Iraqi
insurgency." Somebody, please tell them, these are Iraqis, not
anti-Iraqis. I heard this morning on CNN that the administration is
suggesting that the cleric leading the Shiite uprising, al-Sadr, is
"psychotic." That is what they're saying [g]. He is now a nut case because
he dares to reject and oppose the occupation. Osama bin Ladin was our
friend. So was Saddam Hussein -- but both of them are also "psychotic"
because they dared to oppose the United States. Sure they are. Bush is the
one who is psychotic. And George Bush said yesterday, that these nut-cases
are fighting because they "hate freedom." What an idiot. Talk about the
Peter Principle, this guy really achieved his level of incompetence and is
as dumb as one can get. It is their freedom which is being assaulted while
the U.S. rapes them with our occupation and profiteers from this war.
As for Israel, it was a mistake to let Arafat return and it was a mistake
to stay in the territories if Israel did not (does not) intend to annex
them. Israel has a responsibility now to grant as much right to anyone
living under it's tutelage as anyone living in Israel -- or get the hell
out of Dodge. Stop stealing their water and starving them in their little
enclaves, which some are correctly calling "bantustans. "George Bush ought
to do the same in Iraq before we lose anymore lives, both Iraqi and
American.
