I have seen Pasos on the trail.  Julie Suhr rode a Paso mare and actually won on her.  
Julie's ranch is named after her, Marinera.  My own personal opinion is that when they 
do their termino gait they would seem to put a lot of stress on the joints and waste a 
lot of motion but I don't really know.  I ride all different types.  I have an Arab, a 
mule, TWH and a mustang.  The TWH has done 6 50's this year, his first and does just 
fine.
