I think this is one of those "Everyone knows...", as in "Everyone knows Arabs are the best endurance horses.", or "Everyone knows gaited horses aren't cut out for endurance races."
Well, to quote my ole daddy, "If everyone knows it, it ain't true by a country mile." Given that most of our current gaited horse breeds were developed to carry riders over long distances daily (plantation owners, Peruvian cowboys, circuit riders), I have to believe they should do quite well at endurance racing. I have seen Pasos on the trail. Julie Suhr rode a Paso mare and actually won on her. Julie's ranch is named after her, Marinera. My own personal opinion is that when they do their termino gait they would seem to put a lot of stress on the joints and waste a lot of motion but I don't really know. I ride all different types. I have an Arab, a mule, TWH and a mustang. The TWH has done 6 50's this year, his first and does just fine. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
