I've used both Grip and abcde at different times. I now use abcde exclusively. It's fast and easy to use. It makes ripping to both flac and mp3 in one pass very easy.
The main benefit of grip is that it's got a nice gui. But I actually prefer to use the console....it's faster and easier to automate. And the biggest benefit is that I can just ssh from my laptop to my server and rip cd's without sitting in front of it.
