If you have scratched disks, use a CD scratch repair kit to improve the
quality (and speed) of the rip.  I've had good luck with the Maxell kit:

Also, use the "-z" option with cdparanoia.  This tells cdparanoia to
not accept any skips and to retry forever to read a track.  You'll know
when you've hit an unreadable section that needs attention from the
scratch repair kit.

I've yet to find a CD that did not read successfully with "cdparanoia
-z" after using the scratch repair kit.
