You may have trouble with a big drive if the computer's BIOS is old and
can't boot from it.  External drives should be fine.

I'm definitely a fan of an external backup drive--I was glad I had it
when my 400GB Seagate died.  Sure, the CDs are a backup, but months of
re-ripping, plus tagging, artwork, etc. would have been a pain.
