I'd add a hard drive, if the machine has room. Then you can keep the
operating system and applications on their own drive, which makes
restoring/rebuilding the machine a lot easier if one or the other drive
fails.

SlimServer scanning of the library stored on an internal drive will be
a lot faster, as well as being much faster when working with files,
such as doing some kind of mass tagging operation, or even copying a
lot of large files to the drive.

As mentioned above, though, an older computer may not be able to
recognize a large hard drive. This might force you to buy a (fairly
inexpensive) SATA controller card. That may also be necessary if the
older computer doesn't have SATA drive capability, as nearly all new,
large capacity hard drives are SATA.

And you'd be crazy not to have a backup of all that data, so "both" was
the best answer. The advantage of an external drive for backups is that
you can easily take it to another location. Then in case of a fire or
theft of the server, you'll have a reliable backup.
