I don't know about max, but I use cdparanoia (Linux) that does take a while to rip due to the error correction.. By default iTunes doesn't do "secure" ripping. Normally I expect about 5-10x for most discs. 25min seems a bit long, but there are too many factors to say that Max is bad..
Personally it sounds like Max is doing what it's supposed to be doing..
