I don't know why Monkey's audio exists, and I can't figure out any
reason other than ignorance to choose it over .flac.

I have noticed that lossless files posted to usenet in .ape format
almost always come with tagging errors, etc. They frequently get
packaged in .rar archives, and often are not broken up into individual
tracks but a single large file with a cue sheet. What a PITA,
especially in linux! First you gotta unrar, then you gotta break the
big file into individual tracks, then you gotta transcode to .flac then
you have to correct all the tagging errors. By the time you finish all
this stuff you might as well just go out and buy the freakin' CD!

Some of those amateur posters eventually notice that most of the files
posted are .flac and they learn a little more and switch to .flac.
Others just never get a clue...

I guess Monkey's Audio is sort of like "training wheels" for nascent
bootleggers.
