FLAC's major advantage is that it's an "asymmetrical" codec - much less processing required for unpacking/expanding, so there are more player-devices that can easily support it (less horsepower required in the player). Storage and bandwidth are rapidly becoming cheaper so APE's size advantage, which were once significant, are now becoming less important. There's nothing -wrong- with APE tags per.se. - the problem is that there isn't a -standard- (as in all taggers and players have the same priority order) way to treat them in files with mixed tag types. So, yeah, one reasonable way to cut that gordian knot is to simply stop using APE tags (at least in non-APE files). Given that the Squeezebox 2 and 3 support FLAC "natively" (see above about less horsepower required) and that we don't now care (much) about storage size or bandwidth, then it makes perfect sense, at least for us squeezebox users, to just stop using APE altogether. That make sense?
