Did you set MP3tag to look for APE tags? I don't know if this is still the case, but in the past I know SlimServer used to give priority to APE tags over ID3 tags in MP3 files, and since my usual tag editing tool only shows ID3 tags, I wouldn't notice if there were off-the-wall APE tags in there until I came across them in SlimServer. The setting to show APE tags was somewhat buried in MP3tag.
