no, winamp and WMP and itunes and so on aren't buggy, they're just
badly behaved, as is gracenote (CDDB).

they misappropriate TPE2 to mean Album Artist, and thats out of spec.
but this is so common that it is a de facto standard.

and gracenote sets an album artist for everything, comp or not.

i've always agreed these apps and so on act badly, but that isn't the
point. logitech isn't in business to martyr itself, they want to try
to work easily with whats out there. most users won't know any of the
above, it won't be their fault their stuff is out of spec, and
moreover, they won't care to change just for logitech, they will still
want to use whatever apps they used before slim.

proof that logitech wants to comply is that they respect the TCMP
frame, which is made up and doesn't exist officially, but since its
itunes, they do it. they simply had to bend to the reality out there.

the reason i need to "mistag" albums is that i want to browse by album
artist in all apps. its a universal compromise easily made. i also
don't intend to fight the tide.

and frankly, SC was way off the mark with its VA logic in my case.
more on that...

sorry, that isn't reasonable for logitech to do, and they won't do it.
they expect their customers to use badly behaved apps, like itunes and
TCMP, and they do. it can't be wished away.

i also don't understand philosophically why logitech thinks that
EVERYONE wants all their comps identified and put into one special
category and having their artist list suppressed as a result (and
whatever other effects).

should i really have to tag it all Comp=0 just to undo what it does
automatically and non-optionally? why can't i just opt out? its
hardly an expected feature to a new user.

well, i have ~3000 albums and nearly 30000 songs.

prior to bug 8001, TPE2 wasn't even a consideration for sorting or the
VA logic, yes?

at that time, all my music was "properly tagged" (excepting TPE2, which
had no effect on sorting or the VA logic)

at that time, and i'm not exaggerating, 50% of what the VA logic called
a comp was NOT a comp.

why?

b/c ANY CD i had that had a single artist mismatch (TPE1 for me) got
called a comp.

sure, you can use workarounds to get around it, but why should you have
to?

i disagree.

first of all, there is no OFFICIAL album artist frame in the mp3 spec.

ditto compilation frames.

so why don't you tell me how to "properly tag" (a loaded term) ones
mp3s and have SC get it right for ALL albums with non-optional VA
logic?
