Yes. The majority of users just have albums that are either tagged with
a single artist or have compilations tagged with differing artists.
Every other configuration usually involves manual tagging.
Most people are just content with that. They don't want to learn about
tagging schemes and they don't care about guest artists. They are
content with the guest artist being listed in the song title such as
'(feat. XY)' or '(with YZ)'.
The VA logic just works for them.

If you want to go further than this there are still ways to accomplish
what you want with proper tagging. 
If you are so keen on getting SC to display your metadata the way you
want you should first get rid of the flawed concept that is id3 and use
an open tagging scheme like vorbis comments.
And please stop blaming SC for not supporting the same deficient
concepts other programs invented (see CatBus' phone no. metaphor
earlier in this thread).

Because humans know better they need to make this information available
to the machine in some way. Adequate metadata is one (and currently
supported) way. Mind reading is not (yet) implemented in SC.
