I had just replaced a few CD's with Remastered HDCD ones and was really
bothered that I liked the old ones better. Something was wrong. I first
thought they might be over compressed. Well it turns out it was the HDCD
encoding which will make unprocessed rips sound 6dB hot and noisier.

I'm a big fan of dbpoweramp and just ran a bunch of these HDCD rips
through the HD codec and now they sound fantasic.

You can pass your whole library through it and it will only apply the
HDCD decoding to tracks it sees it on. It's embedded in the 16bit
data.

Very slick.
