It's just that my consistency is album-to-album, not track-to-track (except random mixes, for which there is no better solution) or disc-to-disc (your preferred approach).

But some of us prefer to interpret "album gain" as "album gain". Especially when the "disc" distinction is gone because they are all just tracks in a folder with the same album tag. The objective functions are just different. You're minimizing variance across discs, I'm minimizing variance across albums, which leaves me with more variance within albums (that is, when there is a difference in the average gain across discs). I am operating on the assumption that gain difference across discs in an album is intended, whereas you can't imagine that an artist would ever intend that.
