When implemented correctly, adding replay gain does not alter the audio
of the content whatsoever. It merely adds standard tags (which for FLAC
files are typically "Vorbis comments"), which are then read by the
playback software. See http://replaygain.hydrogenaudio.org/

There is a related process called "normalization" that does alter the
audio data, which you generally want to avoid.
