I've recently started using my Squeezebox Classic again, having not used it for a year or so (computer died, with non-backed-up library, and I went back to CDs).
I've read the Beginners' Guide to Ripping, which includes directions to lots of different software packages. Not mentioned, though, is what happens when I just put a CD in my PC's drive--it rips automatically via Windows Media Player. Squeezebox then appears to play it fine, though the quality is not as good as I'd have hoped on some of the ones I've played. Would quality be improved if I downloaded new software? Are there other advantages to using non-pre-installed software? Would ripping be faster if I wasn't using WMP? Or is it just that people don't like to use Windows pre-installed software (which I understand ...).
