If you are not happy with the quality of your files try switching to FLAC (lossless) which is one of the native formats for the SB series.
dbPoweramp is available as a free download and works well as a ripping application in my experience, even if their website and set up procedure are not entirely intuitive. If you rip to a lossless format, you can always consider these as master files and derive alternatives such as MP3 or WMA. This gives you a chance to find what level of compression you can live with.
