Good answer from Maggior. A couple of additional thoughts. Yes, you don't have to do anything special for the gaps (or lack thereof) to be correct when ripping to FLAC. And even mp3 (with LAME) deals with gaps perfectly as well.
By the way, many people confuse the "recreate the exact CD" issue that maggior mentions with lossy vs lossless audio in the rips. Folks somehow assume that without the cue sheet and the ability to recreate the pregaps, etc. that maggior discusses, then they have somehow created a lossy version of the CD. However, most people, including myself have no interest whatsoever in recreating the original CD to be played on CD players correctly. Once ripped to FLAC (even without cue sheets) I have lossless version of the audio, gapless, etc. And all I ever play is the digital file!
