Thanks for the advice. I tried it. It worked. In another case, I had a file over ten minutes long -- it was two songs, the song named in the track title and a "hidden track," separated by a two minute silence. Not knowing what else to do, I searched around and found a free audio file splitter called Slice. It is made by NCH Software and distributed as a promotion for their other products. It's not exactly feature rich. The options for splitting files are pretty limited. Basically, it will (a) split a file into evenly divided chunks (you get to say how many), (b) split a file into chunks of a single duration (you get to say how long), or (c) split a file wherever it finds a period of silence (you get to say how long a period). I used option (c) and it worked well. The only problem was that Slice removes ALL the silence from between the two chunks. That is, the first file contained no silence at the end and the second contained none at the beginning. That's okay for the second file, but I would like there to be some space after the first. I solved that by making a separate version of the first using option (b) and specifying enough duration so that it left 2-3 seconds of silence after the song.
