You could put a record on in your car?! ;o) Unless you spend a LOT of time in the car, switching your library over to ALAC so you can play an iPod in the car seems to me like the tail wagging the dog. My first suggestion would be to make a second library with a popular lossy codec like MP3. You can convert your existing library easily with various tools, and it's a small extra step to do with your new rips. Lossless codecs are overkill for a car environment. And 24 bit files overkill in extremis.
But you said you didn't want a second music library, so if I haven't persuaded you on that, there may be FLAC options for a car. Those car stereos with an "iPod connection" -- are they proprietary iPod connections or are they basic 3.5mm line-in jacks, which would work with any portable player?
