You could also consider a shadow library. Because of space constraints on my iPods I use Robin Bowes' flac2mp3 script to automatically maintain a shadow copy of my FLAC library in MP3 format, choosing the highest possible quality MP3 options.
It has the advantage that any tags or artwork I change in the FLAC files are automatically replicated in the MP3 copies, and it runs on any OS that supports Perl. Whilst I'd prefer lossless I don't have the room on the iPods for all of the library in MP3 format, so lossless is a non-starter. Also, in the car environment, very high bitrate MP3 sounds pretty good in the sub-optimal listening environment.
