I did some quick googling (not in-depth research) and it sounds to me like (a) current iPods' DACs max out at 16-bits, (b) Rockbox'd iPods can play 24-bit FLACs, presumably by downconverting them. Which iPods, which versions of Rockbox, and any side effects are left as exercises for the interested reader.
