Just about all the advice given so far is top notch so I can only offer a few comments and precautions as a result of my experience ripping my 3,000 CDs to flac. The three biggest bottlenecks for me were: 1) not properly backing up my hard drive which resulted in my having to rip around 1,500 CDs. So as stated earlier by maggior make sure that you have a rock solid backup plan and stick to it! 2) Cover art - I happen to like first rate and large cover art so while dbPoweramp does a good job of finding cover art most of the time the cover art found is somewhat small (500 X 500 is usually the largest size with 250 X 250 being the norm) and very low resolution. For the most part I scanned the covers myself, which takes time although when doing a number CDs I used the CD loading and ripping time to do the scanning. 3) Tagging - as stated earlier dbPoweramp does a great job of finding good tags with jazz, rock, r&b, world - heck just about every kind of music but classical. Tagging classical music is more about personal preferences than anything else and the tags that dbPoweramp comes up with usually will not be what you had in mind. Sometimes it was easy to adjust the tags before ripping but more often it was just faster to rip the CD and modify the tag afterwards with a good tagging program, such as mp3tag. This would be the main drawback to using a robot for ripping since just about all the tags for classical music will be incorrect. It should also be noted that dbPoweramp can be configured to write both tags and file names pretty much as you want them so it pays to spend some time setting things up before hand to minimize any post ripping file naming and tagging work. -- ralphpnj Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels -> Snatch -> The Transporter -> Transporter 2 (oops) -> Touch 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/jazzfann/) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ralphpnj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10827 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88402 _______________________________________________ ripping mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/ripping
