>> Hence why I think it should really be labelled "Compilations" or >> "[Various Artists]" - it's not the same as the album artist called >> "Various Artists". > >what??? WHAT??? > >you raised HOLY HELL when i suggested that! you "resented" the idea of >changing the default from "VArious Artists" to ANYTHING else, no matter >how small! you wrote pages of nonsense as to why, and now you claim >you said this? > I think you are confused. I still think the default album artist to be assigned to an album when it is auto-detected as a compilation should be "Various Artists". Many user don't have album artist tags, and thus will get "Various Artists" for auto-detected compilations.
To change the default pref setting to "fix" it for people that do have album artist tags, will break it for people that don't. No-one knows how many people have album artists, and how many people don't. Say that it's 50-50. Out of the 50% that do have album artists, some may not use "Various Artists", but may use "VA", "V/A", "Various", "Soundtrack", etc. i.e. Some % of this set will not have a problem either. I don't see the point in applying a frig for something that will cause problems for an established user base that don't currently have a problem. If you read carefully, I was suggesting that the "special Various Artists" entry at the top of the artists list should not be related to the pref string that defines the album artist name to assign to compilations that don't have an album artist tag. This contains compilation albums; the albums could have different album artists, not only albums by Various Artists, so putting any arbitrary artist name string isn't really correct. The special artist name should stand out in some way, eg. "[Compilations]" is quite clear, and very unlikely to be a duplicate of a real artist name. >i would add to that list a giant "master list" where you could see all >albumartists, artists, composers, etc all at once in one list, >configureable via some type of SBS or display option. but we agree on >the above anyway, its VITAL that a user can easily browse between >artists and albumartists in the main core app. > I wouldn't say vital. I too would prefer to have extra browse modes, so I can quickly see a list of composers, or bands, etc. And I have done that within Custom Browse (Browse Artists > All, or Browse Artists > Artists, or Browse Artists > Composers, or Browse Artists > Cover Artists, etc. But it is possible for a user to configure the list of artists to contain all artists or only artists involved with albums. That makes it possible for a user to choose. Some older IR Remotes had a "Browse" button that could navigate a user to a list of artists. Some users only want to find albums to play, others want a full list, but one list configured either way is often alright. >i have several problems with this. first of all, in the bug report i >was the first to suggest this, (but credit goes to Jeff Flowerday for >the discovery), and in the forums, i am the only one suggesting people >do this when they INVARIABLY run into this issue, as forum posts show. > Is "List compilation albums under each artist" the default, in which case all artists will be displayed, irrespective of compilation indicator? If so, only if the user has chosen to reduce the artists list to hide some artists, does it end up hiding perhaps more than they might expect? >thirdly, if you are no longer affected phil in your niche album case, >you didn't explain why not...? I'm pretty sure i've said a few times already. Firstly, I was seeing the album within the artists list, but I think this was perhaps similar to Erlands case - where I'd been playing around with the album, and scanning for changes, SBS scanner wasn't fully updating the DB in the same way that a complete clear & scan would work. Secondly, I wouldn't typically choose to browse to these sort of albums in this way. If this was one missing album out of thousands, I wouldn't notice. i.e. browsing for something to play, I wouldn't think "oh, there's an album missing". If I want to play a particular album, I search for it, rather that try to browse to it. Thirdly, I have custom browse for browsing all artists, album artists, cover artists, composers, etc, which is more versatile. >my understanding is that right now, EVERYTHING in the mysql SBS DB does >have an AA value, even if one does not exist in the tags. > There's two types of album artist: - every album record has a single album contributor - every album and every track has a list of contributors, which can have 0, 1 or more album artist contributors, 0, 1 or more artist contributors, and/or 0, 1 or more track contributors, amongst other contributors. _______________________________________________ ripping mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/ripping
