I think one solution would be to leave things generally as they are but
make the server interpreted compilations stand out, no matter what the
user determines that "album artist" should be.

So if you have the server set to name the compilations with "Various
Artist" show it as [Various Artist] if the server decides it is a
compilation or COMPILATION = 1.... Maybe this is what Phil is
suggesting?

This way if you decide the album artist should be "Compilations" show
it as [Compilations] or whatever else you decide.

If a person actually has Album Artist tags, then the server could make
it possible to browse those under the right spot in the alphabet (V for
Various Artists) and leave it there without regard to the COMPILATION
tag and hopefully without hiding the album.

This is not the perfect solution, but it seems easy. Of course there
are those rare instances where something like Various Artist is an
actual artist, but I guess I am one that doesn't care whether I am
looking for a compilation. I am just looking for specific Album
Artists, and if that artist happens to be called "Various Artist" then
I know I can find the album I'm looking for.

The important thing really is being able to find your music, and that
is tough if it ends up hidden because of a bug in the software. The
short term fix should really eliminate that possibility. The Custom
Browse plugin has saved me now for 2 years, but I can never use the
artist menu with its default behavior and find any album with AA =
Various Artists
